Bhutan's CD-ROM stamp cover!!

In the world of Philately, the Kingdom of Bhutan in the Eastern Himalayas is well known for its innovative and exquisite postage stamps.

On 21st February 2009 coinciding with the 29th Birthday of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the 5th Druk Gyalpo of the Kingdom of Bhutan, Bhutan Post issued its second issue in a series of world's first CD-ROM postage stamps. These stamps are mini-CDs that fit into exquisitely decorated, self-adhesive envelopes. When affixed to a larger envelope, the CD-ROM stamp can be used as postage. When inserted into a computer, the CD-ROM plays an 8-minute video about Bhutan
"Bhutan: Voting for Happiness" illustrates the country's peaceful transition from heredity monarchy to constitutional democracy. "Bhutan: Coronation 2008" documents the coronation of Bhutan's new king, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. The colorful stamps illustrate Bhutan's recent history for all time.

But have you ever wonder whether these extraordinary stamps can really be used for posting? Well! today, I received one such "rare" cover sent registered from an eBayer.
This cover actually bears the logo of India Post on the barcode label attached to it. Ms. Jyoti of Rainbow Stamp Club explained, "the India Post and Bhutanese Govt. has mutual arrangement for forwarding of foreign mails' originated from Bhutan.....the mails go to New Delhi from Bhutan, and then to destinations with Indian personnel's help with Indian labels for records." Interesting!

According to an article, it is rare for the Bhutan stamps being used in country and most letters mailed from Bhutan are mostly from tourists writing home about their travels in this beautiful little kingdom . So its safe to say that only up to 30% of all the Bhutan stamps ever printed and issued are ever used as regular postage and the ones that are , are in big demand for the rare cancellation marks of the Bhutan Postal Service .

On my next posting, I shall share with you another 2 covers also with CD-ROM postage stamps that I bought on the eBay. Till then, have a great day!
