2008 S'pore Grand Prix Set of Stamps

It has been a while since my last post on Singapore stamps. So today, I would like to share with you an interesting pair of stamps issued by Singpost to commemorate Singapore's first ever Formula One Race as well as Formula One's first night race.On 26th September 2008, a colourful set of two $2 stamps featuring the thumbnail drawing of a race car against the Singapore CBD skyline was released by Singpost to celebrate the special occasion.

The 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, formally known as The 2008 Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, was the fifteenth race of the 2008 Formula One season and the first Singapore Grand Prix to be part of the Formula One World Championship. It was held from 26–28 September at the newly built street circuit on the Marina Bay, Singapore.

It was the first ever Formula One race held at night (the timing of the night event meant that it could be broadcast live at a convenient time for European TV audiences) and the 800th Formula One World Championship race overall. It was held at one of two new circuits in 2008, the other being at the 2008 European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain.

The race, which was contested over 61 laps, was won by Fernando Alonso for the Renault team from 15th on the grid. Nico Rosberg claimed second in his Williams followed by Driver's Championship leader, Lewis Hamilton, driving for McLaren. The race extended Hamilton's lead in the Driver's standings to 7 points over rival Falipe Massa. (Wikipedia)

As for season 2009, The Singapore Grand Prix will take place from 25-27 September.
