1st Summer Youth Olympic Games Stamps

Here is another pair of stamps released by Singpost on 25th Jun 2008 to commemorate Singapore’s winning bid for the host city of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010.

The stamps come in two denominations – 1st Local (26¢) and $2. On these stamps which form one complete picture, one can see the strong and harmonious bond of Singapore youths, as they link arms to celebrate Singapore’s win.

The 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games (officially known as 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games) is the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, a major international sports and cultural festival to be celebrated in the tradition of the Summer Olympic Games from August 14 to August 26, 2010, during the XXIX Olympiad. It will be held every 4 years and will feature athletes between the ages of 14 and 18.

The idea for such an event was envisioned in 2001 by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge. On July 6, 2007, IOC members at the 119th IOC session in Guatemala City approved the creation of a youth version of the Olympic Games.

Eleven cities expressed interest in hosting the Games, nine of which ultimately applied. Five cities were selected to the short list: Athens (Greece), Bangkok (Thailand), Moscow (Russia), Singapore, and Turin (Italy). The list was further shortened to two finalists: Singapore and Moscow. Singapore won the right to host the Games on 21 February 2008 after a televised announcement in Lausanne, Switzerland by IOC President Jacques Rogge. (Wikipedia)
